The Throne of The Duke of New York
2017
22 x 54 x 24.5
Wood, Bullet Casings, Brass, Leather
This piece explores the idea of the throne as the seat of nobility and a representation of power. The design of the chair is influenced by the Pharaoh’s thrones of ancient Egypt, with classical lines and polished caps.
While the form of the throne heralds back to ancient times, the materials used reference modern paradigms of power. Throughout history, weapons have defined power, from the discovery of iron and the refinement of steel to the advent of the atomic bomb. Bullets, the modern marker of power, are used here to mimic the pattern of bamboo, drawing on the juxtaposition of natural beauty, and man-made violence.
